The Sportcar S50 was planned to commemorate the 2000th anniversary of Honda Motor. The car was released in 1999. Since the S800, the predecessor of Honda's FR sports car, ceased production in 1970, it was the first revival in 29 years and attracted a lot of attention.
The body shape was only an open 2-seater, and the F2C engine that produced 250 horsepower while being a naturally aspirated 20-liter was specially tuned in the front mid, but it was the body that attracted attention, and it is said that the rigidity equivalent to that of a closed-body car was ensured by adopting a robust and lightweight high X-bone frame structure. In order to focus on sure, rigid handling, the steering was a fixed type that did not even have a tilt mechanism, and the instrument panel was not equipped with a glove box.
Production of the S2000 continued from its launch in 1999 to 2009 without changing the basic design, but there are two main models: the early 2-liter model, the mid-term model with facelifts such as the bumper design, and the late model with an increased engine displacement to 2.2 liters. It is common to refer to the 2-liter model as the AP1 and the 2.2-liter model as the AP2.
